Transport Minister to open Reid Highway extension
The Minister for Transport, Mr Simon O’Brien, will officially open the $78 million Reid Highway extension on Friday, 26 February.
For the past 15 months, Macmahon has worked closely with Main Roads to build a 2.6 kilometre upgrade of the highway to extend the road link between Perth’s eastern suburbs, the coast and the Swan Valley.
The ceremony will open the Reid Highway and Swan River Bridge to traffic while other works continue to fully complete the project. Eventually, the old Whiteman Bridge will be disassembled and its timber recycled through the City of Swan and the Swan Wood Turners Association.
Once the bridge is open the focus will turn to completing the tie-ins, which are currently inaccessible because of the current road alignment. The old Whiteman Bridge will be demolished, and the site will be tidied up and revegetated and landscaped.
New traffic lights will replace the temporary roundabout at the intersection with the Great Northern Highway, but until then motorists should continue to expect traffic switches at the roundabout to allow work to continue on the intersection upgrade.
