Consultation
Main Roads WA held the first community briefing session in Caversham in late 2006, followed by further sessions with the City of Swan, Swan Valley Progress Association and Swan Valley Ratepayers and Residents' Association.
A working group was formed with people from the local community, City of Swan, Bandyup Women's Prison, Sandalford Winery and Swanleigh Residential College to address local issues and the provision for local access to the prison and Middle Swan Reserve.
This resulted in a number of changes to the project with recommendations including:
- An access option removing the need for non-local traffic access to Bandyup Women's Prison from West Swan Road via Victoria Street.
- A service road south of the highway with a road underpass to connect it with the western section of the existing Middle Swan Road.
- Removing Whiteman Bridge and closing Middle Swan Road on either side of the bridge.
These options were endorsed by the City of Swan and integrated into the overall design and construction contract.
