Green light for Reid Highway extension

Leading WA construction contractor Macmahon has been engaged by Main Roads WA in a design and construction contract to extend Reid Highway from West Swan Road to Great Northern Highway, adding a vital link to Perth’s road system.

Spanning 2.6km, the $78 million project involves the construction of a four-lane dual carriageway, replacing Whiteman Bridge, improving the Great Northern Highway-Roe Highway interchange and upgrading Jane Brook Bridge.

The project also includes cyclist and pedestrian facilities, landscaping, re-vegetation, public art, new lighting, noise barriers and drainage works.

Planning has been in the pipeline for the past 15 years and the project has now been given the green light. The move comes as a response to rapid residential, industrial and commercial growth and high traffic volumes along Middle Swan Road.

Various requirements relating to land, environment, safety, access, cultural heritage and traffic management have been addressed and will continue to be dealt with as needed during the construction phase.

The Reid Highway extension is expected to bring considerable economic, social and environmental benefits to local residents, commuters and road transport operators by improving overall access to the City of Swan region.

When finished, the project will provide improved connections and accommodate larger vehicles for a more efficient transport network.
